Every day in our country we hear about farmer suicides due to drought failing their crops and debts sometimes as little as thousands of rupees that push them to the brink of disaster. While we all look at the government for policy changes to help the rural poor, there are NGOs that are constituted by people like you and me who are working tirelessly for the cause of rural poor. Aham Bhumika is one such NGO.

What is Aham Bhumika?

It comprises of people from all walks of life like working professionals, homemakers, teachers, artists etc. who have put in their might to serve the cause of underprivileged and rural poor. Their mission is to help underprivileged children and women, orphans and destitutes in our villages by routing donations of cash and kind for their benefit.

What do they do?

Here is what they help with:

  • Collect clothes, toys and games from donors and distribute them to needy children. They work with anganwadis to do this.
  • They collect old bicycles, repair them and give them to children to cycle their way to schools located far away from their homes.
  • They collect foodgrain from donors for the benefit of orphans and destitutes. They also make effort to train them in vocations to help them earn a respectable livelihood.
  • They collect books from donors and have helped set up an informal library in the village to help children enjoy the joys of reading.
  • They also help poor women by giving them food and clothes. They also run health camps for them.

Rural pre-school in crisis

Aham Bhumika runs a pre-school in the village of Borda, Bhopal. The school has 40 underprivileged children.  They are in dire need of funds to keep the pre-school running. Currently, they are running the school with the help of donations of individual contributors which are falling woefully short. They need Rs. 14,000 per month to run this pre-school. They require monetary donations to prevent the school from shutting down.

How can we help?

Cash donation: Cash donation will give a new lease of life to the rural pre-school. It will also help them in their other charitable endeavors.

Donation in kind: You can donate clothes, food grain, medicines, toys, books etc. to their collection centres in Bhopal.

Volunteer: You can share your precious time and skills by helping out with their activities. It is a win-win for those you help and for you as well.

Buy from them: They sell rural merchandise like hand-painted shoes, pretty cushion covers, covers, bed sheets, quilts etc. which is their initiative to promote rural craftsmanship. All proceeds from these sales go to their education fund. Get more details from their Facebook page, twitter account and website.
