I sit by my window. The weather is beautiful outside. The trees are flush with leaves. Copious rains have been doing them a world of good. The plants are blooming! The Hydrangea with their lovely lavender-blue canopies; the pretty jasmine flowers that emanate a soft, soothing perfume; and the bright red, orange and pink hibiscus, large and beautiful — they beckon me to reach out to them. It is a treat for the eyes. The trees and the grasses sway in the strong winds. When I look up, the sky is gray with large clouds pregnant with heavy droplets threatening to shed their load at any instant. Bangalore has a weather to die for! Pleasant and cool, it is ideal to be outdoors. I can hear my friends playing in the ground — their laughter, their cheering and jeering, their banter.

Oh how I long to go out and play and enjoy the great weather that everyone extolls. Alas, I sit cooped up inside suffering from runny nose, itchy eyes and a terrible bout of respiratory allergies and praying that the sun comes out again!

Footnote: Bangalore is termed the allergy capital of India. 9% of its population suffers from chronic sinusitis. Its low humidity, high pollution levels and the pollen of the widely occurring Pyrethrum plants are the main culprits.

  2. What a fantastic description ! I could almost see the flowers. Get well soon ! Its a shame you have to stay indoors.

    • Thank you Ruchira! That is exactly the way it looks from my window, and those flowers are there in my small patch. But this is not me though I do get allergies once in a while. This is about a child who faces these :). I am out and about. I take my daily walks outdoors as well!

  3. Same here rachna… Bangalore weather had been regular in ensuring I fall sickevery year during June-July. A weather I won’t say I love ,for I have been born and brought up in tamilnadu. Despite the scorching heat, we did have fun indoors and outdoors… Missing the sunshine….

    • Vaishnavi sorry to hear that. Bangalore weather can be a culprit for allergies. The first year that I came here, I got repeated bouts. Later yoga and acclimatization helped. Now I get these allergies rarely. But yes when they do come, they are strenuous.

  4. I expected something else when you started the story. What a description of the weather..made me long for it, too. The running nose – ah! ruined it all 🙂

    Get well soon.

  5. Whenever i see a beautiful plant in the nursery i am told that it was brought from Bangalore-alas it dies in local heat, you have to cosset it like a child.

    • Indeed Indu! Bangalore is a haven for plants. We have got plants from Ooty that have thrived here. In your weather, I am sure they will not survive. I love the city :).

  6. True. This weather is so different from Delhi. When I came here a few days back and what a change it was from 44deg.

  7. I had frontal sinusitis while I was in Bangalore and was suffering a lot. Amrutanjan was my solace. After coming here, there is no trace of it 🙂
But really miss my bengaluru sometimes…

  8. Alas, nothing is perfect!

  9. Hope the little child gets better soon and enjoys its city so beautifully described by you. Strange how pollen from flowers create havock – thinking of NZ as kids here are highly asthma prone.

    • It is sad that our bodies have turned against harmless pollen and are treating it as an enemy. Those who get respiratory allergies know how debilitating they can be. Thank you for reading, KayEm!

  10. The weather these days is certainly to die for. beautifully put in words. Hope you get well soon and play in the rain 🙂

  11. wow..what a description! The weather certainly is awesome these days!

  12. It sounds like my younger one, when he was allergic to the dry cold of Delhi. He would begin coughing and wheezing even if he laughed aloud or shouted while playing. It used to break my heart to see him sit in a corner, after having his medicine, waiting for the bout to stop. Bangalore climate doesn’t suit me either 🙁

  13. Nice description. Good to see you attempting fiction like writing.

  14. Wonder what is holding him or her back! Good read Rachna.

  15. Bangalore weather is great or atleast used to be great. Unfortunately these days the pollution, like every large city, is terrible. Noise wise the madness is same as in Delhi.

  16. You have painted such a pretty picture with your words Rachna!!

    Sorry about your allergies though.

  17. It really is a shame when one has allergies and one cannot truly enjoy the beauty of the outdoors!

  18. Hi Rachna, I think the weather in Bangalore is still a blessing as compared to Delhi, Hyderabad or Kerala. We, in these three states, often complain that we wish we had the Bangalore weather:)
