cherished blogfest

We all hang on to old memories. They become so precious that we re-live them through photos or material possessions. I have old handwritten letters from friends, college scrapbooks, some lovely cards, even old emails that the husband and I exchanged during our courtship. Stuff we hoard and possibly take to our graves so precious it is.

As I pen this post, I stare at this car hanging that is lying on my coffee table currently. It is old, possibly worn in a few places but I still keep hanging it in my car. It has seen 3 cars in the last almost 16 years. Yes, this is that ancient. The husband and I picked it up in one of the curio shops during one of our most memorable trips on Route 66 in California. It was quaint and lovely. It hung in the first car we owned in the US.

When we moved back to India, it was carefully wrapped and taken back with us. Then when we bought our first car in Pune, this car hanging found its place in the new car. It has been on beautiful journeys with us. It has been a quiet witness as we went from being a couple to a family of four then five. And recently when I sold my old car which I was very attached to, I took this out and kept it safely.

I will be hanging it in the new car soon. For some reason, I just can’t let go of it. Looking at it gently swinging in the car brings joy and makes me feel at home.

What can I say? The material possessions are special because human memoies have touched it! Thus, this car hanging is my cherished charm. It has traveled across cities and countries and still continues to be my constant companion.

Do you have a cherished object that you love? Would love to hear about it.

  1. Aren’t such memories priceless?

I know materialistic things do not hold emotions, but their human touch is something that will last forever.

  2. I love what you said – that material possessions become precious because we have memories wrapped up in them. That’s so true. And that’s what I have a bunch of cards, mementos and drawings by the kids all kept away safely. But then I am a hoarder.

  3. True, we get so attached to some of the material things because of the memories that are attached with them. Liked the way you have clicked the pic of your car charm! 🙂

  4. True, the material possessions are special because human memories are attached to it! 🙂 Our own car is fourteen years old and still its strange that we haven’t hung anything on to it yet. But the car itself is dear to us, the many fond memories that it possesses.

  5. I think you’ve summed it up perfectly when you said – “The material possessions are special because human memories have touched it.” It’s true – it isn’t the items we cherish as much as the fond memories they bring us.

  6. So cute…yes, small things do carry bigger and beautiful memories…I have an entire post dedicated to these little things…I used to have a small pic of lord Balaji we bought together on our first Tirupathi trip and donno where I misplaced it. Every trip we make, we take it together and the lord has blessed us reach home safely despite snow, storms, rains…etc. I got a new one similar to that in this trip 🙂

  7. I can understand your attachment, it’s very beautiful too. A small thing yet it means so much. We have a similar one bought at a Buddhist Temple… Loved how it hangs and moves with the car.

  8. Hello Rachna. I am one of the co-hosts of the Cherished Blogfest and I thank you for participating and sharing your special memories with us. I live in Mumbai and I also work as a freelance content writer for past 7 years. I loved the car hanging that you have mentioned here. It looks very pretty and I can see why you are so attached to it. I loved the way you have written this post. Absolutely heart-touching. Great post.

  9. Some items are precious way beyond the value that other people place on them and that is the sentiment attached to them. I still have the letters from my courtship days too, guarded safely 🙂

This looks really lovely and how wonderful that it’s stayed for 16 years! May it stay forever 🙂

  10. Lovely post Rachna. I think items we own are not necessarily valuable in terms of money but the experiences that we have gone through with them. This charm in your cars has been on several adventures with you and your family. Looking at it each day, is a beautiful reminder of all you’ve been through. It’s a beautiful artefact and a symbol for life.

  11. Loved your post. Things are precious cos of the memories that are tied to them. And it’s beautiful. Even if worn out, it has that charm and stories from your life in the past.

  12. I have loads of stuff with sentimental value that I refuse to part with, much to my husband’s chagrin 🙂 Loved the look of your car hanging and it has been with you for so long, cherished it has to be 🙂 The memories we make stay with us and the sight of such mementos helps relive them.

  13. “The material possessions are special because human memories have touched it!” Such a great line. Thanks for sharing your cherished object.

  14. All the cards and collages my daughter made for my birthday and our anniversaries
All the cards my husband gave me on my birthday with precious notes in them….

  15. Oh I have so many such things….I don’t know which one to pick. There is a purse which my friend gave to me before I left Shillong for Bangalore. That is still with me. And there is a 1 rupee note that my sister had given to me many years a go, it’s still there and I don’t intend to ever spend it.. 🙂

  16. I have a whole lot of cherished things, Rachna. Your cherished object may be worn but it looks beautiful! So hard to let go of things that have a lot of memories attached! Sigh!

  17. My cherished Objects is a book with a note from my Grandad and a lovely card that my little niece made for when I was in Japan !
