Check workmanship: A baby crib must be well made and sturdy. After assembly, it must not wobble or be unstable in any way.  Check that the slats are well screwed and the rails are strong and durable. When you get it assembled at home, make sure that all the nuts, bolts and screws are tightened and in place. Any missing screws could endanger the stability of the crib.

16 Thoughts on “Tips to buy baby cribs

  1. My baby’s crib was a boon for me. It also doubled up as a play pen when I needed to cook and keep her in a safe place, away from harm. She stopped using it after she turned 2, though, but I found great pleasure in getting it spruced up and giving it away to a very dear friend who had a child 6 yeas later. Agree that good quality woodwork and safety are prime concerns of baby furniture.

    • Yep, mine too. It was a great play pen and later converted well to co-sleeper and toddler bed. I used it for my second son too. I am also looking to give this away as it was custom made and quite sturdy.

  2. Though we didnt use a crib for A, but we bought one for a friend and they simply loved it and used it for both their kids. And when their child outgrew the crib stage, they gave it to for their relative. Agree, cribs for kids should be safe and sturdy!

    • We had got a crib custom made for the elder son which had removable rails and worked well as a co-sleeper and toddler bed later. Back then, the cribs available in the market were not that good. Later, we used the same one for the younger one. It is still there in my house. Would love to pass it on to someone.

  3. Well, I’m far behind in terms of having baby in my life but come back for it when in need. Nicely done. Appreciate your concern over little things in matter of baby. 🙂

Ha , ha just realised how far I have traveled after reading this sweet post on baby cribs!

  7. That’s gonna be helpful for those doing homework before buying cribs. This is serious business really.
We have one that can be transformed into a toddler bed and day bed and later can be made into a twin even. It just got handed down to the littler one. And she’s getting used to it.

Have you seen those diy projects where you turn cribs into study stations or craft tables for the kids. Cool ideas but we won’t be doing that. Or maybe I’ll do that when I’m an empty nester and there is no need for that twin bed anymore. 😀

    • I hope so, Divya. How lovely! I had seen some excellent cribs in the US. When I was buying for my kids, the range was quite limited here. But these days, I see great ideas and range here as well. You know what I am doing with their crib currently. I have taken off the rails on both sides. The mattress stays. And I have put round pillows just like a diwan. We use it for seating in the lounge/TV area. 😀

  8. Nice information here, Rachna. I didn’t have so many choices while buying one for my son. Online shopping has made life easier and comfortable…. 🙂

    • Yes, same here. I didn’t either back then. I had to get one custom made through the carpenter. But now we have excellent designs and portals.

Do not leave without commenting. I love a good conversation :).
