There was a time when for Indian parents, a child’s academic brilliance was of paramount importance. Creative activities and sports were good as long as they were clubbed under hobbies or extracurricular activities. They were never meant to be pursued as careers. Kids had to work towards becoming doctors, engineers and professionals no matter where their true calling or passions lie. Today, parents are gripped with a fever of making their children all-rounder geniuses sometimes at the risk of burning them out with an overload of activities. Do the children really enjoy the drama or dance class that you have enrolled them in? Are you vicariously living your own dreams through them? Either way, a child and his/her dreams suffer.

Through my writing, I have always endorsed that children be allowed to enjoy their childhood. Let them pursue their passions, and they will figure out what they are good at and what to do with their life. Classmate, a leading stationery brand by ITC has been reaching out to parents with the same message through #Followyourheart campaign.  On August 23rd this year, Classmate organized the “Follow your Heart” talk session with an aim to help children and parents hear from achievers who followed their hearts and came up trumps in their chosen calling. Soha Ali Khan, Ayushmann Khurrana, Terence Lewis and Ravinder Singh shared their experiences and insights in a lively discussion in Mumbai. The session was attended by 3,000 students with over 35,000 students across 14 cities joining through a country wide simulcast. An additional 85,000+ students also participated in this session through Facebook. The teachers and Principals of these schools also participated in this event.

Classmate ‘Follow Your Heart’ highlighted the importance of exploring your true calling – by believing in your unique interests and talents.  All the panelists shared their own experiences on how they took decisions during their formative years, which led to changing their paths, often multiple times in the quest to follow their heart. Their inputs were welcomed by the students and teachers alike.

  2. Here is my go at the stationery goodie bag. Liked page. Posted pic with hashtags. Leaving link here. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10202278941161107&set=o.157417677652848&type=1

  3. You are right to point out many parents just loading their kids with their own unfulfilled expectations. Ans such people casually taunt other parents who don’t try and mess up the lives of their children. Good to see the efforts being put in by Classmate.

  4. My son is an adult now and I always allowed him to follow his heart. However there was a time when after class ten he wanted to pursue football as a career. But we had to explain that football in India is yet to a emerge as a career option. Beyond that, he is pretty much his own man. This is wonderful initiative Rachna. I will go ahead and do the needful.

    • Thanks Alka! I understand what you are saying. Even my son is all taken in with football these days. As a matter of fact, it is a new game every season. I guess, there is a lot of time for him to explore what he likes and does not like. Just like you, I will guide and help but leave them on their own to take pleasures in what they enjoy. My elder son is showing a lot of interest in learning cooking these days. So, I initiated him into chopping. I hope you participate as well with a lovely pic of you and G.

  5. Ah! For a moment there I thought you were giving away classmates 🙂

Well! I am waiting first for that foolish girl who will assent to marrying me and then to see if we can get a child – after that I can participate by putting up a photo 🙂

  6. Great initiative ! And couldn’t agree with you more – we definitely need to let them choose and follow what their heart wants!

  7. Great! The sooner parents learn to ease up the strain on their kids the better-it has become a craze today to turn their children into picture perfect models of achievement.

  8. A welcome initiative. Kids are so overburdened these days. Instead of developing a passion for arts or other extracurricular activities people end up creating a dislike and a fear for them due to all the pressure .

  9. Great Initiative Rachna.Parents should rescue children from the constant competitive pressures and set them free to choose their own paths. My Entry..
