What I meant was Hindi movie heroines. The other day watching Ms. Katrina Kaif for the promotion of a movie, I was struck by how little Hindi she knew. She still has a very discernible phirang accent and she is literally deadpan. She was doing great playing arm candy in movies with Akshay Kumar where she had no emoting to do. But with New York and Ajab Prem ki….. I was struck by how poor an actress she is. She looks great – very beautiful, wonderful figure but doesn’t one tire of it (maybe not the guys :)) and is it wrong to expect some meaty acting? And how does she manage to churn out hits despite such mediocre acting? Men, I guess who can’t get enough of her beauty? The same applies to Deepika. A beautiful woman, she has hardly 2-3 expressions she juggles with in each movie. Kareena who with her emaciated frame and bad features is not even beautiful but is a pretty good actress. She can carry off intense as well as inane roles with equal elan. I like Asin from the current breed who reminds me a lot of Sridevi with her histrionics. Priyanka Chopra is a good mix of beauty and acting. Can’t think of any more current ones.

My point is that in the show biz it is great to look good, dress well, dance well and groom oneself well. But can they work as hard on their acting abilities and put in some real effort to understand the language they are emoting in. Most of the Hindi film stars speak atrocious Hindi and actually take pride in their “toota-phoota” Hindi. I think actors have the longest innings as compared to just stars. Konkona would a good example of someone who captivates you with her acting. You even start finding her beautiful for her ordinary looks, the same earlier applied to Kajol. We need more of their breed in Bollywood today.

7 Thoughts on “Indian heroines with mindnumbing acting talents.

  1. Do I smell something burning? 😉
But seriously, acting skills of a beautiful actress is not the only thing the success of a movie rests upon. The story, directing and the hero(who even covers up for the lack of skills of his heroine) are somethings that make a movie success.
We don’t have to watch a movie to see these movies. Do we?

But for these babes to have some decent shelf-life they better have some acting skills too.

  2. 😛

these girls hardly have any dialogues in the movie!! So chalta hai..

BTW i cant stand katrena/kareena so stopped watching their movies.

Sabke baare me likha what about lara 😛
Remember Blue and her stupid dialogue delivery
    😛

  3. Hi Rachna

Thanks for your comments on my blog, now sure if winter is a good time, this year water was less during monsoon and not sure who its going to be now…. but then again if the water is less you can get down to the bottom of the falls and have a great time in the nature’s lap 🙂

    Stop by when u get a chance…

    Regards
    Samson

  4. oops! sorry for the typo – “not sure who its going to be now” I mean not sure how its going to be now.

  5. @GP I was only talking about the success of the heroines, not really of the movies.

@Bhupesh The problem arises when they have roles where they have to perform :). Lara was pretty bad, you are right! Vidya Balan is good but she seems very matronly.

  6. IMHO you cannot judge present bollywood actresses based on their acting versatilities bar some exceptions.

To expect ‘acting’ except awing audiences with their candy-body -which I prefer time to time – is equal to asking for world peace.

Big banners cash in on people spending money watching ‘masala’ movies tried and trusted as mother’s cooking.

Not only men but women do follow their attires, make-ups and their idiosyncrasies.

Yes men are awestruck with such lovely presence and often more than anything fantasying.

As an audience we have two options
    1)Watch
    2)Do not watch

But the latter option isn’t applicable most times.

Meatier roles sells. Attracts most of the ‘mindnumbs’.

Like me and you, who watch, criticise, applaud, sleep the day and watch the new one – if it isn’t much of a drag.

  7. @tangyorangesour I really do not agree with a couple of your opinions. Why can’t we expect the heroines to be better actors? We pay to watch the movies and of course, I have stopped watching some of the mind-numbing movies like those starring Akshay, Katrina, Kareena in combos where anything goes in the name of comedy ( retarded stuff).

It is good that they pay attention to their dressing and grooming and there is nothing wrong in following fashion trends. My whole point was that if these mindless movies continue to be hits and all the incentive they have is to work out and dress up well, where is the incentive to hone their acting talent, spend time in preparing for roles and get some real expressions on their faces.

Do not leave without commenting. I love a good conversation :).
