As 10 people die of swine flu and the deaths and number of infections increase everyday, the panic mounts. This being a type of flu which spreads through air, it is very difficult to curtail and prevent infections owing to the fact that even during the incubation period of the virus it could spread from one person to another. We are in contact with so many people everyday that it is practically and humanly impossible to avoid contact. I think children are more vulnerable to get the infection due to their low immunity levels. Knowing that over a 1000 people had tested positive for H1N1 in India and many more must have even got cured of it even before they became aware of it, there have been 10 deaths so far. That means that chances of mortality are very low and often times attributed to other factors like predisposed conditions like diabetes, heart conditions etc. and sometimes due to negligence and delay in getting treatment.

Yes, of course we all get scared but let us keep the panic and paranoia low. We need to be well informed about the symptoms. Keep the child at home or work from home as soon as one gets flu-like symptoms. Watch for a couple of days and see if the condition worsens. Any signs of respiratory problems or even flu-symptoms persisting should warrant a visit to the doctor to see if further testing is needed. Most people even if inflicted with swine flu would need no medication and could get better on their own. Let us be positive and composed about the whole thing. In India where over 900 people die everyday of Tuberculosis and many more number of tropical diseases like malaria, dengue etc., we need to see things in perspective.

As with any other disease vigilance and awareness is needed. Let us do what is in our hands instead of worrying about what could happen which is anyway not under our control.
