Today’s papers had an amazing human story of loss, determination and achievement. Dr. Shah Faisal from Kupwara lost his father to Kashmiri militants. The very next day, he sat for his MBBS exam and cleared them! Now, after so many years, he has topped the Indian Civil Services Exam, UPSC. He is only the second Muslim, and a first Kashmiri to do so. He symbolizes everything good about India — a simple, honest, middle-class family; suffered adversity — came up against all odds by his sheer grit and determination.
We need more of Dr. Shah Faisals to give us pride and hope in the adage that “the good transcends all.”
Hats off to you Dr. Shah Faisal. We hope to see you reach many more milestones in your Civil Services career and bring a Kashmiri perspective to mainstream bureaucracy.

@Jon I think, what matters is his approach to adversity and how he can change circumstances. We will have to see, if he can make a difference to the existing system and mindset.
@wisedonkey Yes, it is a challenge for him, but I think he has the strength of character to achieve. Let’s hope that he molds the system instead of the system molding him.

I was just thinking, if we who live far away from these regions of conflict are being pseudo moralstic when we desperately search for a hero…or when we blindly believe what the Government/mass media says…donno

@Jon It could be true both ways. Maybe, we want to see something good, as per our definition, in an area of conflict. See the contrast between the two Faisals in the news since the past few days. Wouldn’t we as Indians feel proud that ours turned to prove a point, whereas the other one brought shame to his country’s name when faced with adverse circumstances.
