Comforters pulled up to the faces or kicked away. Legs peeking out; arms strewn around sometimes on top of each other. And a calm on the faces. The best part of the day is when I go to wake up the kids. I always sit down a couple of minutes and watch them in their sleep. They look so carefree, almost like angels when asleep (very different from how they behave when up and about :)). Then I call out their names. It is always Gautam, the younger one, who stirs first. He is an easy riser even on holidays. And, he gets up at 6.40 without a whimper most days.

Coco comes wagging his tail as soon as I call him. And he will go to both the boys trying to lick their faces that they expertly hide. Amid this tomfoolery, Gautam springs up and walks down to the dining room. And Siddharth gets up muttering about some more sleep and resolving to sleep a little earlier that night. Of course, a promise that is broken every single night.  The sleepy guys then get their hugs and kisses from mom. And Gautam begins his questions while brushing his teeth. They range from “Why petrol that burns in car engines to make it move does not burn the car down?” to Siddharth’s “Why are saturated fats bad for you and unsaturated fats good for you?” Ain’t I glad that I took science and was a good student  ;-).

I am the first one to wake up and I hate the alarm that goes off when it is almost dark. Trying to catch some last bits of sleep, I grudgingly get up. Coco is waiting with a warm welcome. His entire body seems to be dancing with his wagging tail. A beautiful sight to behold early in the morning. And then I take him out before picking up the newspapers, putting milk on the boil and get to cooking for the kids. This happens before I go to wake them up. And then they leave for school, waving and yelling, “Have a nice day! I love you, mom, dad!”

And that is how mornings begin in our home.

How do you begin your day?

74 Thoughts on “Beautiful mornings!

  1. I do the same Rachna! Sit and watch my daughter’s beautiful innocent face for a while before she wakes up and chaos ensues. She is not an easy child to wake but only on school days. On weekends when I want to sleep in a little she will be up before every one else. Gladly her school is at a stone’s throw so she doesn’t have to wake up at the crack of the dawn. It is a lovely picture you painted and probably is more or less the same in all households with kids. In our house we have buzo instead of Coco and after 10 years he has taken to wag his tail from his bed only. Ha! That dog is LAZZYYY. God bless you and your boys!!

    • Thank you Swapna for your comment. Yes, the calm before the storm as you rightly pointed out :). Oh Buzo is old so perhaps can be forgiven :).Thanks for your warm words.

  2. Love the description and the sight of the two sleeping boys!! I also hate getting up in the mornings, but unfortunately, it has to be done! 😀 I’m sure a happy doggie would brighten up my mornings too! Some day!!

  3. Such a cute post, Rachna and one that brought a smile. Most of the days I just carry my son to the bathroom. He does not like to wake up early. So usually i try to wake him up by kissing, then tickling, then yelling and then finally picking him up 😛

  4. I still do. Just watch my sons face while he sleeps. And pray that peace, happiness and health are always with him. Heartfelt post.

  5. How do you have the heart to wake them? I notice that they both sleep with their eyes partially open, like my niece does. 🙂
Our mornings would have been much lazier if our morning alarm service a.k.a. Pablo doesn’t work so well!

    • I know it is a tough job but has to be done. Yep, they do :). Yeah, our morning alarm does the same on weekends. I tell you they are all my sleep enemies :).Thank you for reading.

  6. Lovely mornings! We need to wake up every morning no matter what. Very nicely described post.

  7. Very sweet post!! Sidharth and Gautam, both are very cute. Both of them have a striking resemblence. God bless them!! My grand daughters also make too much fuss about getting up on School days when their Mom tries to wake them. But if Elsa (our Dog) comes wagging her tail and starts licking their faces, they jump like a spring!!

  8. We cuddle cuddle and cuddle till we realize that we are getting late. 😛

  9. My alarm snoozes about 5 times before I make up my mind to get up and then I look at the clock and scream…. the whole house is awake 😛

Loved the picture of boys sleeping in actually the same pose with hands up 🙂

  10. Your mornings sound just perfect. We are just two… my mornings seem dull now!!

  11. A very familiar scene with a little less or more of tantrums. When the moms finally run with bags and kids to see them off on the waiting school bus, they are already a spentforce.

  12. Thankfully, I have no issues in the morning. My day begins at noon! 🙂
    Charming essay!

  13. Sweet post! 🙂 Our mornings begin with the ringing of the doorbell at 7 by the car cleaner 😀

  14. I love being awaken by someone that loves me, but for now I settle for my iPhone’s church bells 😉 Seriously, I relate…you are so lucky 🙂

  15. Mine mornings go about the same routine, except that my daughter is not an easy riser, especially on wintery weekdays. I keep hopping between kitchen and her bed, but before I-love-u and and have-great-day hug, I usually get a frown with hate-you-mom tag.

  16. I have to be different.I don’t have to wake up anyone .My morning starts at 5.30 for regular walk

  17. How cute your story is. It just reminded me of how my mom used to wake me up years back. Till date I have this habit of saying “5 more minutes please” – earlier to mom, and now to hubby. Getting that extra minutes of sleep on the morning is a bliss. I roll over on the bed and get up at 6.30 when the husband had dutifully kept the rice cooker, and made boost drink for me. I wake up just because I need to make breakfast, and get ready to go to office. I am not a mornings person. And getting up anytime before 6.30 is the most difficult task for me.

    • Ah lucky you! With kids, you have no other choice but to wake up. The worse scenario is them missing the school ;-P. I wait for weekends to catch some extra sleep.

  18. Very similar of course – minus the news paper, boiling milk and Coco.

  19. A nice summary of how your day begins. Whenever, I have aerobics class, I keep my alarm for 5.30 am, I feel so sleepy, and wish I could sleep a little longer. However, Saturdays and Sundays are off, and I sleep till 7.30 am. Apart from the class there is no school or college rush for me, and my husband also works from the house, and he is an early riser, on all days. He would get up boil milk, put the coffee dicoction, have his coffee and go for his walk along with Bumnilli, who will be eagerly waiting.
Although our dog is so naughty , just looking at her innocent face makes me forget everything and give her a big hug and play ruff and tuff with her.
I am not a morning person at all, but all my life, I have had to get up early, even our college used to start at 6.15 am in summer, and 6,45 am in winter. So now whenever, there is no class I make use of the time sleeping late.
I used to wait for their school vacation, when they would also sleep late and I could sleep late.

    • Me too. I love to sleep till 7.30 on weekends. Hubby, he wakes up later than me. But on weekends, sometimes when he gets up early, he takes over the morning chores especially of brewing our cup of coffee. The only good part about school vacation is catching some extra sleep. But since both of us work from home, it is a challenge to keep them engaged.

  20. Sweet post! I love to watch over my sleeping kids, only ‘snugbugs’ as I call them:) I let them snooze for 5 more minutes on school days not more! I find that it is best I get up early as I can begin my day peacefully.

  21. The last three years, my life has changed so much! But what hasn’t changed is my “fowl” ways.

Loved the picture you painted, Rachna. Made me sigh.

  22. Wow, the post simply talked about 30-45 minutes of your morning time, and it still felt so very substantial. This bought the memories of my childhood, when my mom used to do the same for my brother and me. And me being the eldest got up late just like Sidhhart here 🙂 It felt mundane then, but now when I am on my own, I miss those precious little moments spent on the breakfast table before school or during dinner. And you know what, even now I feel my mornings as mundane, but I only realise their importance when somedays I have to change the schedule.

    • Thank you Jenny. And I am sure they will miss it when they are grown up, and we will miss it when they are gone. And mundane is good. Like you pointed out, it hurts when the routine is disturbed mostly due to stressful events.

  23. Times of childhood are such a bliss 🙂

  24. That was a beautiful, beautiful peep into your life Rachna.Yes kids give a lot of happines & purpose to our lives. It is a pity they grow up n leave home so soon!

    • Thank you so much Indu for your warm words. I write these posts so that I can continue to appreciate the small things in life that we often let go off. I am grateful for their presence and love in my life.

  25. Your post (and that beautiful photograph) made me wish my kids were babes all over again. Guess I’ll have to wait for grandkids.

  26. Watching when they are asleep? Oh Yeah, I do that with my son too 🙂 Very warm post Rachna….and boy! Who on earth invented alarms!

    • Thanks so much Jaish! I agree, I can watch forever. I love watching hubby sleep too. I swear to God. Alarms must be banned. But then how will I wake up? 🙂

  27. Wow, that is sweet Rachna.. truly r beautiful mornings 🙂

    fc*klove

  28. There’s nothing like watching sleeping kids. I can do that for hours together. If only I didn’t have this many chores to do!! 🙂
Waking up early is so difficult for me. Hubby wakes me up 😉

    • Yeah, me too. But mornings are the busiest. And, other work has not even begun when you have already been running around for an hour and a half. When I think, I wonder how I do it everyday :).

  29. Such a lovely post, Rachna. 🙂

  30. Beautiful mornings, really. 🙂 The post brought a smile. Now I wake up on my own, on holidays, it’s a different story. And then I walk around the whole house, brushing my teeth. 😉

  31. Lovely…sweet post, Rachna. My little one is no longer small..and out of my nest 🙁

  32. Thats a nice post Rachna ! Yes, its always a pleasure to watch the children slowly awaken !

  33. seems my earlier comment could not be posted somehow….anyways…..

sweet post indeed……they look so cute in their sleep…..May God bless them….:)

I remember my father used to come early morning in our room to wake up us and whenever we try to avoid his calls he used to switch of the fan and simply smile on our reactions….miss those days….. 🙁

  34. Lovely images, images that I wait to experience. Thanks, Rachna, for making the future look so desirable.

    • And I need to keep writing these to make sure that despite all the toil and tears, it is worth having them in my life :). Wish you lots of fun with kids in the future!

  35. Such a cute post! 🙂 Made me miss home…
For me, mornings begin with hitting the snooze button, getting up a little more late than I can actually afford and then invariably, skipping breakfast. 🙁 Not a pleasant sight.

  36. What a beautiful morning for you! My husband gets up first but normally it’s a difference of few minutes. We still follow taking bath, doing puja and eating routine. Seriously, there is nothing more beautiful than watching your kids 🙂

    • Wow! Bath, pooja and eating — that so never happens in my house :). Yep, the mornings are hectic. I can never afford to sleep late. And the race against time is always strenuous, but there are fun moments too. And they give you the energy to deal with the toil :). Watching them in sleep is priceless!

Do not leave without commenting. I love a good conversation :).
