I have started loving the print media. For one, it provides us comprehensive information about all events. Secondly, it does not keep repeating the same thing over and over again. For current events, my favorite newspaper is DNA and magazine is Outlook. These days, whenever you switch on any news channel (NDTV 24X7, Times Now or CNN IBN), the breaking news flashing in bold gets on to your nerves. Some inane news is constantly flashed as Breaking News. Also, in the event of tragedies, like the recent Mangalore air crash, the coverage was suffocating. It went on non stop for almost two days, even when they had nothing new to show. It was even more terrible to thrust the mics in the faces of shocked survivors or grieving families to ask utterly stupid questions.
What would these news channels do if no tragedies take place? Probably, create one. Also, there is hardly any coverage of international events. If you watch BBC World News, you would realize that so much more is happening around us, which is hardly getting reported. And, it has been a long time since I watched a Hindi news channel. They are even more sensational and obnoxious in their content and tone.
Sometimes, going on the internet and browsing the news sites gives much more information than spending one hour in front of the television hearing the same news repeat over and over again !

15 Thoughts on “Frustrating news channels

  1. I agree with u.

  2. I call these news channels as news manufacturing factories.
They are there to please their political bosses.
Each editor awaits a seat in the Rajya Sabha and a Pdma award

  3. Hi Rachna, I promised myself the day I stop working, retire….I will stop reading the papers.
And today I don’t anymore. My wife does. I might on and off maybe watch TV news, but only if something my wife tells me about…..

And actually I no longer feel upset or get frustrated or angry anymore like when I used to read the papers….I mean reading of politicians taking bribes, mothers killing own child, old man fooling around with SYTs, Obama this, Obama that….

Oh well, one consolation, my blood pressure is below the Equator, ha ha.
    Have a pleasant weekend, Lee.

  4. @Suffix Thanks.

@BKChowla I know, I am losing trust in everything which overtly looks good. It seems, everything and everyone, is hand in glove with those in power for personal gains. Who cares about what is right and morality any more?

@Uncle Lee I wish, I could stop reading newspapers. But, I believe that by closing my eyes, the status quo will still remain. I wish something more substantial could be done to right the wrongs there are. But, your BP is in check, which is good 🙂

  5. YES YES YES.

suprisingly timesofindia has so much content for eg on science, compared with times now.
perhaps those in charge think the content requirements are different, but it gets so tiring and irritating to sit through shrill voices and hysteric anchors for more than 10 minutes..

if those in charge were to made to sit and watch the channels, surely the content would change..

with the breaking news concept, we have lost, perspective and focus.

comparitively, printmedia like outlook indian express etc, do a better job and give better coverage even if they come out late.

  6. Oh yes I agreee I find Indian news channels exceptionally faltu. no other word for them. BBC, CNN or even Al Jazeera are far superior. If the Mangalore crash was traumatic, the recent shooting on Sri Sri or the attention on cine stars everything is so hyped, why can’t they just let them live in peace.
But then how will they fill in 24 hours. Why cant they make some educational programs, documentaries etc.
DD days were better, yes news was biased but atleast it was educational.

  7. Agree with you. They bore the life of a person. At times I wonder about the pathetic mental condition of the news readers…but they are paid for it.
I make sure to watch BBC in the morning.
Agree with Chowlaji about the Rajya Sabh seat and the Padma Awards.
I wonder how they don’t get bored in the news room???

  8. @wise donkey I know! Maybe, they think that people who want to know about science would want the Discovery and Nat Geo channels. Or, they think that we are fools with low mental capabilities. The talk shows really are rather stupid. Sometimes, the panelists are picked up without any thoughts. And, the anchors just want to cut off people instead of listening to them.

@Bhagya Of course, they have to fill 24 hours, but they can have good programming slots like they have Net 3.0 or other such programs.

@Gouri Yes, they ought to be bored themselves for doing this again and again. But, at least they are paid for it. We are not even paid and expected to watch this 🙂

  9. lolzzzzzzz

    Not only this
I was shocked to see the disappointment on the reporter faces when no one died during that accidental fire on Sri Sri Ravisankara.

I think it was Times Now reporter who tried to get a lot of info but lastly said in a sad very sad voice, “Luckily no one died” (unlucky me!! I missed a big story!!!!)

    These days news channel sucks!!!
I am happy with google news feed

  10. Some time ago, a pretty famous news anchorman in the Netherlands retired. When interviewed, he was asked for his most shocking insight. He said that certain topics would not appear on the evening news, because there were no camera images!

Before broadcasting, he’d scan the script and ask why a certain news item wasn’t included. The producer would then quip that he couldn’t get video material from that area…

  11. @Bhupesh You are absolutely right! I have the same feeling that they are almost disappointed that the events are not more tragic. It is a sick state of affairs, but in the horde for TRPs anything goes!

@Bart 🙂 In India, it is surely not the lack of images, Bart, which stops them. They are just obsessed with controversies, scandals and tragedies, sometimes, imaginary.

  12. bb’s comments were awesome 🙂

I love outlook too. They write up things most of others simply choose to ignore. Then there are experts too who write on that.

I believe these many news channels shouldnt have been allowed to come up. This is not an area of competition as they influence public opinion!

  13. @Jon I wonder how we can stop any channels from coming up. But, if they don’t have enough viewership and in turn advertisements, then they would wound up sooner or later.

  14. I don’t read the paper nor do I watch news-channel. Strange huh?

Not quite. Perhaps I’m behaving irresponsibly, but thats my prerogative.

And yes, they are without any sense of “real” journalism. And whats news without a bit of ‘mirch-masala’ – after all thats what majority of our countrymen likes to see!

But having said that, it sells what is to be profitable after all at the end of the day, “its nothing personal it’s just business”.
