My Passport is expiring in September 2010. In April 2010, I went to the Bangalore One Center at J P Nagar to apply for renewal of Passport. Since the original passport was not issued from Bangalore, passport renewal requires a police verification. Bangalore One Center was really very good and helpful. The whole process was completed in less than 10 minutes, and they said that I should get my passport in 35 days.
I was told to track the status of my passport online after 1 week. I have been doing that, and it stays at Police verification is pending, contact your local police station. On contacting the police station, I was told that my file has not been received by them. Now there are no telephone numbers at the RPO to check the reasons for the delay. They have provided an email id for the complaint. I responded to that, but no one has sent any reply to me.
It has been 2 months now, and even the first stage has not been completed. I don’t even know what to do further. A friend of mine had applied in February, and her police verification was also completed but she is still awaiting her passport. So, you can see that it is a big scam. Maybe, they want to push you to Tatkal by paying more. I don’t know. It is a frustrating experience like most things in India where you have to get something done. I guess, I will wait one more month, and then maybe file a letter under the RTI Act.
The RPO is the most inefficient place, which does not even provide a decent telephone number to follow up. I wonder if any of you can share your experiences in this regard with me and advise me as to what to do next.

PS : My file has reached the Police Station, but guess what. They want me to go there for the verification. I have a good idea why!

15 Thoughts on “Passport Renewal Woes!

  1. To move things in a government office is tiresome… dont say its inefficient…they will move things super fast if you pull some strings..

Hopefully computerisation will solve the problems a bit!!

  2. 🙂 Again!!!!

Well Mine verification was done in a month time and now i am checking with passport office to get it!!!!!!!!

Waise there might be some issue, why don’t you contacting the inquiry number at Bangalore RPO.

See Again this passport is going to keep you busy!!
No holidyas even after schools are open
    😛

  3. Rachana, I too had problems. As the head of the police department was a friend, it worked. Some departments in the Govt. specially like the Passport office, files move at a snails pace.

Recently my Gas agency was giving a lot of trouble in the delivery of filled cylinders. I made a complaint with the Gas Company and now its trouble free.

Hope everything works out well for you fast:)

  4. This is going to be a long comment.
My 1st pasport was made when I was in college-issued in Hyd. After marriage and name change I got it reissued from Blore for the remaining tenure of the 1st passport. Knew abt the hassles of reissue in India so had planned to do that here in Bahrain but it so happened that I was in India during that time (pregnancy and delivery). SO had to appley in Vizag bcoz I was at Vizag and By that time Vizag had a passport office. While the police enquiry took just 1 week and Rs 400 I still didnt get my PP even after 2 and a half months. My newborn already possessed one by that time. Onenquiry I was told that my application has been sent for enquiry @ Blore and further enquiry told that as the passport office has been shifted my file has been lost. It took a visit to the passport officer at vizag, histrionics and a ‘dhamaki’ from the PP officer from Bahrain to get My passport.
Try to get the help from some officers at the PP office, If u have time keep on visitng them if not some’notes’ help

  5. @Jon Yes, Jon. You are right, of course. They will move things, if we know how to approach them from the right channel. I wonder how computerisation will take care of this, because police verification is still in human hands.

@Bhupesh Lucky you! But, keep your fingers crossed till you get it in your hands. There was no issue except lethargy. I came to know today, that indeed they have my file. Maybe, they are sleeping over it, you know why.

hahaha. I am busy with my work. I just wish, I did not have to waste precious over these mundane activities.

@Gouri Thanks for your input. I am seeing where I could get a contact.

@Bhagya nightmare for you. My original passport was issued in Ahmedabad and happened pretty quickly because dad took care of it. After marriage, I went and got name change done and got a new passport issued. That was easy and was done in a couple of days, as we were in the US. Now that the renewal time has come, we are stuck in Bangalore :).

  6. Speaking of Police verification-
The cop who came for my verification was a tall, lean , old guy. He was quite, decent and friendly
He went on and on talking about how difficult it is to tend for a family with all-girl children.
He used to finish the sentence with an emotional ‘Sir, I haven’t earned even a single paisa dishonestly’

He went on and on until the point of boredom and stopped only when my dad gave him the qouta of bribe 😉

  7. iT IS NOT ONLY PASSPORT,FOR ANY WORK TO BE DONE,THERE ARE BROKERS,AGENTS AND CORRUPTION IS SO VISIBLE.
IDEALLY–IT MAY SOUND IDIOTIC–ONE SHOULD GET ANY PASSPORT JOB DONE IN ANY INDIAN EMBASSY ABROAD.THEY TAKE ONLY 48 HRS TO SEE IT THROUGH

  8. I got my new passport from kerala.
for local police verification, we ave to give some money as tip for police

  9. Scary! On the bright side, your application is at the police station — that’s good!

  10. Hi! Rachna,

There is always a delay if there is an address change in your new passport, and there is always a call, to meet them at the police station….its like an unwritten rule.

  11. Government offices are same in whole world

  12. @Jon That was really funny. This is how most of them function, either telling tales of their problems or simply grinning with their palms extended. Anything goes for a bribe. I guess, I have reconciled myself to paying some bribe when the police officer comes home. Unlike other places, I would hardly want to create a ruckus with a police officer.

@ BK Chowla Very true! And, what is said is indeed right. I wish, I was abroad and could have got my passport renewed easily.

@Agnes Yep, at least there is some movement.

@Readers Dias It is not a delay, it seems like a norm these days. It is the case with most of my friends who live closeby.

@A Thanks so much for visiting my blog. I disagree. I didn’t see this kind of inefficiency during my stint in the US. Maybe, your experience has been different.

  13. I think all they need is bribe.
whole system is infected with corruption and they do not have a habit of doing work without getting something

  14. @Pankaj Thanks for visiting. I have a similar feeling too.

Do not leave without commenting. I love a good conversation :).
