I was very keen to meet Gautam’s teacher this year and was eagerly awaiting the first PTI. Gautam, as was mentioned in an earlier post, was unable to even hold the pencil the entire last year in Pre Kg. I taught him how to hold pencil during the summer vacations, and he is now able to trace lines or join dots. But, I had a heart attack seeing the syllabus for LKG. They will be beginning cursive writing of small letters this year. I was anxious that he would feel that he is lagging behind.
He is an extremely shy guy and has large tears in his eyes if he feels that he is not able to do something properly. So, anyway that was the reason for my apprehension. I did not want to fight with his teacher to let him do his own thing and at his pace. I believe kindergarten is definitely not the time to put pressure on young kids.
But, I was pleasantly surprised to meet his teacher. She is warm and compassionate. She shares my thoughts about the partnership between the teacher and parents for the best development of the child. She has managed to get comfortable with Gautam within the month. He likes her a lot, always saying that she is loving and kind. She acknowledged that he would take a little more time than other kids to be better at writing, but she was not too concerned about it (refreshing change). She was very confident that she can handle him easily (he is very shy and finds it very hard to speak up). She is a trained teacher, and it showed in the approach in which she spoke to us.
Many parents have noticed that, of late, a lot of untrained teachers are getting into schools. It is generally believed that teaching is easy. How difficult is it to teach a young child English or Maths? But, teaching is much more about attitude and about understanding the child’s psychology. Teaching is about an understanding of how each child is different and how set expectations and paths do not work when teaching small kids.
I was pleasantly surprised to interact with her and very happy too. A mother cannot be happier if her child is happy, and Gautam seems to be happy.

It is true, some teachers think of teaching only a subject whereas teaching is much beyond a subject
I am so happy for Gautam. A kid’s basic motor development continues till age 6, and its not right to evaluate little kids at such tiny age. I hope he has a fruitful year with this nice teacher.
Yes, getting a good teacher is difficult. In the initial days a patient and understanding teacher who will lay a good foundation is very necessary. A big BIG congrats to u and Gautam

You r so rite …its so early to put pressure at this inncocent age….parents first, are very confused wether their kid will do good or bad.,.. but coz of teacher they find peace in mind and surety that…yes the kid is in safe, caring hands…

How wonderful that your son has a compassionate and understanding teacher. I must say teachers have a huge job with many different personalities and learning styles in each class. I was always fortunate that my children had wonderful teachers!

That’s really great… I can understand your anxiety because my son has also just joined nursery and since he does not interact much with others, I am as anxious as a fish out of water… teachers do have a big responsibility on their shoulders but very few actually realize that and try to live up to it…

indeed. and its so tough to find teachers who believe its not just about teaching language maths science either.
they are role models and have such a great influence on the kids..
